Not a satellite. It was actually a project utilizing the the Arecibo radio telescope array. Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. Essentially analyzing the radio telescope data and looking for artificially generated signals.
When the US government pulled the plug on this, a group of scientists at Berkely got some funding and started SETI at home. A project where you can donate your CPU time to churn out a pattern recognition algorithm to help analyze the data from Arecibo. They essentially chop up data into 258K (I think chunks), you upload that to your computer then the algorithm runs as a screen saver (i.e., when your machine is idle). When its done, it sends the results back to Berkeley.
