sorry if this q seem a bit silly...but just wanna learn more from all you 6 string sifus...
after a bit pandai on guitar playing, i just realised that there is actually a massive difference in pickup (PU) selection when playing...say if you use an ibanez with a H-S-H congfig?
so i'd just like to know when do u guys swith to use the PU positions for your guitar solos, and for what type of songs?
For eg, Does Kirk Hammet only use bridge PU for all his solos, or does he change to neck? can't really figure this out...or you guys can gimme other example of guitarists out there?
as at now, i presume for metal songs, the bridge PU will be used more that other whole soloing, but for blues based solo, maybe better to use the single coil, ie. the mid PU...
but as at the moment i really love the sound from my neck PU since it's a bit warm, less harsh and trebly...and when u do that palm muted shred-style scall using the bigger strings, it'd sound better...
anyways...hope u guys could get what i'm trying to ask here...kot23 lah ada general on which PU to use for certain types of solo, etc?
thx |

Good question ni utk discussion!

but cuba perhatikan kalau u all ada video clip dia, atau try differentiate bunyik dia... part solo dia ada guna both bridge and neck pickup. paling \significant intro solo dia guna neck, tang plucking dia guna both bridge and neck. masa solo ending tu,, mula2 guna neck, then bridge, then neck balik... di tambah pulak dengan volume port dia adjust sesedap rasa ppppppeergh,,,,,
solo, kalau main metal guna bridge, ala2 malmsteen guna neck pickup, sama gak kalau main blues,
kalau ala2 jazz, fussion aku guna both neck and mid. especially kalau main clean sound sama kalau main lagu 60'an. _________________ http://electricguitartips.net

bg aku, aku kene tengok jenis equipmnet yg aku guna dulu. kalau aku pakai satu amp ni dgn satu gitar ni, maybe aku gune neck pu kalau sound die sedap. tapi bile aku tukar gitar/amp lain, maybe sound neck pu die xsedap plak, so tukar bridge pu. in my opinion it all depends on the equipment you use _________________ Death Crew Productions

Rasanya, kita kene tau bila nak pakai neck or bridge pickup.
Neck pickup biasanya bunyi lebih mellow and round. So kene pandai setting the pickup sweet spot. kata la u memang suka main fret area 5 to 12 so pastikan sweet spot pickup neck berada pada area tu. kalo suka main 12 to 22 so adjust neck pickup berada pada sweet spot pada ketinggin tali utk fret fret tu.
MIX neck bridge.
- aku stuju kalo main ala ala gary moore.
- akan hasil bunyi bright and mellow. Tajam tapi warm.
Ayoooo! jangan terlalu detail sangat lah bebenda ne karang sampai biler biler masih tak puas hati.
Tapi aku pun macam deadzid juga layan bridge, semua aku suka lebih bright. kecuali ler aku main lagu vintage deep purple, ozzy n bla bla yang perlukan bunyi dark warm overdrive baru aku guna neck pickup. macam lagu smoke in the water aku main guna neck sd SH-1 baru bunyi vintage kuar.
Zuan [mamat blues],
Tone blues rasanya best guna neck pickup kan?
tapi teknology sekarang guna effect effect and multi effect, bridge pun boleh jadi mellow and neck jadi bright.
off topic
/// kalo salah harap betulkan... hehehhe

No strict rules actually...just experiment and do what you like...if you do something different then others, you may create your own signature tone as well. |

cayolah...
i've always been a fan of the bridge coz layan metal sikit...but lately ni semenjak try guna neck pu, i find the sound irresistable...maybe i'm mellowing with age. Coz lately i find that the bridge punye tone is a little bit too bright and trebly...
so i guess it's up to what we like...and how old we're getting...haha...
but maybe if we do a cover, and in order to get the tone of the original song, better kita try pakai the same pikap selection of the original guitarists kot...
so - lu orang tahu kirk hammet selalu pakai pu mana satu for most of his riffs? i really cant freakin tell...
semalam tgk video G3 (concert G3 pernah tgk dulu kat bukit jalil tapi kena hambat polis pukul 4 pagi...kekeke...)..steve vai guna banyak neck pikap bila main for the love of god...tu yg sound merdu tu...
btw - last nite kat guitar store hartamas, gua test fender SRV usa (RM7.8K) with a fender dual reverb twin amp (RM7k) ada customer ni baru angkat...perghh...clean tone dia on the neck PU with bit of reverb best giler babs siot...tak terror main blues terus rasa macam terror siot...
(and to me that's nearly to the perfect tone that i've even heard from a clean electric guitar...)
so now i understrand why ppl dig fender strat so much....mana gua nak cekau rm15 ribu ni nak beli the setup?? hmmm...
anyways, back to the topic - bila pulak korang pakai the middle pikap?? i hate this position coz noise banyak sangat... or maybe that's just my cheap guitar? hehe.... |

jarang lah org pakai middle pickup.. kalau tgk malmsteen main pon, dia switch back n forth between neck / bridge pickups.. kan?
tp kengkadang bila dpt amp yg too bright n treblish, aku guna middle position (half bridge, half neck pickup - guitar aku dual humbucker) utk riffing, solo baru switch ke bridge for more clarity, dan yg penting sekali boleh bikin artificial harmonic (scream!!).. hmm baru aku ingat kenapa aku suka pakai bridge pickup.. hehe sbb nak dpt bunyi guitar menjerit tuh.. hehe _________________ > facebook

when playing Live.you will realize the bridge pickup will cut through more than the neck pickup. (assuming you have a synth player , drummer who can't control his volumn and a 2nd riff guitarist who turns his guitar real loud) _________________ gapnap.com

sometimes it's like asking "which color is best for painting?" ....the colors don't make you a better artist, you can paint with just with one brush/color if you're great like Picasso.
I think just use whatever pickup sounds best to you, you'll probably notice that most of your tone comes from the fingers and how you play anyway...then after a certain stage you feel a NEED to change pickup position to get different dynamics, so you then change to whichever pickup suits that part of the song.
IMHO if you reach a point where it's hard to get a good sound, it's not the pickup/effects but the playing that needs to be adjusted!
and then of course there's this thing about rolling off the volume pot a little.......
Ritchie Blackmore (my hero, I quote him all the time!!!!) would just disconnect/remove the middle pickup on his Strats, who needs so many pickups!
and if you are using a line6 product...don't bother changing anything, your sound will be like shit anyway. Digital crap, a thousand effects to mask a basically fake sound [pulling your leg, okta!]

yes, sold my PODxt to some silly fellow who then sold his POD2.0 to another fellow.
meanwhile, I bought the BOSS ME-50 multi-effects, and I must say it has a damn nice range of overdrive/distorsion tones...it's not analog, though, which is a pity cos can still hear the digital-fakeness but to me it sounds much better than the PODxt's effects. However it does NOT have any amp modelling, which is ok for me cos fedup already with all that modelling crap, I just use the ME50 when I need to play with effects, otherwise i just use my MesaBoogie preamp with analog distorsion=overdrive pedals. |
