I'm beginning to have interest in keyboard and currently exploring my daughter's keyboard, an entry level yamaha keyboard that I bought for her early this year. She's learning piano now (I can't afford a piano yet).

Conceptually, what's the difference between playing keyboard and piano. My current understanding is for keyboard, left hand plays chord while right hand plays melody, however I did come accross some readings kata left hand play bass note while right hand play chords. So agak confuse jugak.

On the other hand, again.. based on my understanding yg tak seberapa ni, piano tak de strcit regime, left right main melody & chord depending on the requirement la.

Keyboard ni mainly for accompaniment purpose, while piano is the show itself. My interest is to learn how to play keyboard.

I play the guitar so concept music tu tau la skit2 tapi note taugeh tu tak reti baca. I hope otai2 bole explain perbezaan teknik permainan bagi both keyboard & piano. Kalau I nak belajar keyboard, where should I start? TQ

there was this one time back in USA..i was so bored that i went online and get a cheap 99 dollar keyboard just so that I can learn how to play it...
i've started with the major chords...but sad to say i've stopped playing it cos i had to get back to malaysia hehe..

i guess the best way to go is like guitar lah...learn to play simple2 major / minor chord songs ( like bryan adam song or something hehe) and learn all the chords first..

i learn playing keyboard using my sister's casio keyboard..Razz

yea..i learn to play some simple songs 1st...even tho the songs don't have keyboards...just play chord and the melody...some theory might come in handy. one thing that came in handy for me is chord inversions.

i don't think any hand is set to play chords only or melody only. depends on wat ur playing. but normally ..like u said it's left for bass/chord right for melody.

Keyboard ni mainly for accompaniment purpose? look at that dream theater guy...or children of bodom...Smile

i didn't study music....so correct me if i'm wrong. Smile

I learn to play the piano 1st when I was 9. then i quit and learn the organ, much much later I took a short rock keyboard lesson in Tulsa.

module-wise, learning the keyboards are very much similar to the piano. left hand controls the bass & rhythm and the right for melody. if u're onley doing keyboard/piano and vocal, then the u should have be good with your left hand. checkout Rhapsody's new uploaded song. http://www.i-bands.net/rhapsody

Ywenna played an excellent piece which i think accompanies Nicole's singing very well!

in a band, keyboards is often given the accompanying job. in a ska/raggae band for example, the keyboard can be considered as the crutial elements for maintaining the rhythm. typically with hammond organ sound. some acid jazz type bands that i listen to give more work to the keyboardman (with electric piano/rhoads sound) and placed their guitarist to keep the rhythm part going. but no matter what the role is, if u play in a band, there's just less need to play the bass part. sometimes u'll end up playing ...just chords and a pinch of melodies here and there for filler.

I spend most of my time with the organ. a very big difference. Organ control the bass part with the left foot. left hand rhytm, and right..melody. i think that's why I'm more comfortable with the accompanying job Laughing
