people
i feel like taking some proper music class before i get really old....hehe...so i got these two instruments, keyboard or classical guitar (*not electric*) in my mind.
so it's keyboard vs classical guitar.
Wanting to learn formally coz i wanna be a bit knowledgeable in these:
1. music theory
2. song composition
3. practical application of the instruments to a band context
4. other reasons which i cant think of.
So if you guys were me, which instrument would you choose? OR you guys wanna give other alternatives?
aku suka tengok orang main classical guitar coz rasa macam elite je...tapi main keyboard ok gak coz easy to use for song composition etc (i thinklah)
dunno if learning all these can actually contribute to better electric guitar playing...or can it?
or can i just learn all these by hard? hmmm...
any info appreciated...
cheers...

opinion - from a junior..
mcm ni, given a chance *again* to choose what instrument to learn, i'll choose keyboard over a guitar.
reason: so damn laku, jamming pun leh nyelit.. just look at the situation even dlm i-band ni, when talking about jamming, yg pyh nak jumper is this 3 thing.. bass, keyboard n drum..
about song composition tu, xleh komen ler.. sbb i dont hv any experience using keyboard.. guess ajeep can have a word in here.
tp theres other alternative gak, why not saxophone? *spelling-check* dgr mcm senang.. contai only 4 octave jer.. *is it?*
but in the end, the choice is yours..
just a penny opinion... _________________

_________________ Gelanggang guitar : http://guitarden.starahead.com |

i just wanna venture into something else other than electric guitar...then apply the techniques / knowledge back to electric guitar?
in terms of broadening my horizon in all aspects of music - classical guitar or keyboard better? |

gapster,
tak semestinya nak main jazz/pop/fusion baru main keyboard,
dalam rock pun boleh apa, cth banyak.. Billy Preston, Ray Manzarek, Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman... keyboard player yang berhaluan rock... dahshat...
takpun belaja main hammond-B3, atau clonewheel..
pasal benda2 nih kena tanya stratopedia, dia belaja keyboard straight dari Manzarek woo...
perghhh ketat tuu... |

^yea i agree.but i do like starting with guitar for those..
guitar you can hamer ons / pulls /vibrato which a keyboard can't do..even if it could..it wouldn't be that 'sweet
and i think those sounds are very very important for those genre..
fusion / jazz / pop ..you can survive without a guitar _________________ gapnap.com

Banyak la lu astrov. Gua main riff zapin pun dah kantoi...
Anyway, aku rasa keyboard > guitar pasal I'm assuming/guessing that there are more things to learn on paper for the keys, compared to the guitar. Sama macam freqZZ kalo gua dapat can blajar muzik, aku blajar keyboard. And aku rasa application dia lagi meluas once kau dah master the instrument.
The other point taken was, laku masa jamming la and takyah berebut nak main gitar.
BTW, for inspiration, cuba lu search video Deep Purple kat YouTube -- Child in Time, Burn, Fireball, Highway Star (solo) and of course, Smoke on the Water.
Video lama lama la tapi. Zaman Jon Lord sedang mencanak-canak. We need a Malaysian Jon Lord!!
Good luck dude! Update us bila dah register masuk kelas nanti. |

Hmmm...
I think this is good enough reason to take a class...

Ok, on a more decent note...
The 1st 3 reason tu, instrument ape2 pon boleh. Kalo tgk student muzik kat ASK or kat UiTM, or maner2 school la, student music ade major instrument dgn minor. Kalo major tu, dorang punyer main instrument la, it can be almost anything. Tp dorang belajar suma bende yg same; song composition, theory, etc. Kadang2 tu student vokal lg dasat part song composition & theory, dorang2 ni yg slalu jd conductor, or music director. Main instrument pon as a minor je. But basically they all learn the same stuff...
But personally, if i were to study music, i would take keys la, as in keyboard or piano. Piano or keyboard basically cover suma bende ape; kalo main slalunye cover bass & rhythm parts, time solo pon mcm tu gak. & then kena study notes, nnt kalo dah terrer nak apply kat maner2 pon blh. If u realized, all the best stuff were writen on piano; byk stuff The Beatles on piano, same goes to Elton John, Diane Warren (all those love ballads), Coldplay, hehe... Basically senang la nak apply, byk genre music blh cover, which is a good thing...
My Rm 0.02...

think of it this way baby
if you are a keyboardist..yes you got your theory down..but to be a guitarist..you need an amount of time to master the technique..
and if you are a good guitarist..i think its pretty easy to be a keyboardist ..the techniques are alot less and easier compare with guitar? _________________ gapnap.com

bagus betul korang...
i guess, keyboard sounds good (not literally)...nak ambil classical guitar karang nak kena simpan kuku ler, apa ler pulak...susah...
or maybe i just try to learn the few popular classical guitar songs like Greens Leaves, Godfather etc just utk eksyen bila pegang classical guitar...buat2 macam pandai...hehe
yeah...since i dunno sh*t about midi - so with keyboard the route to midi prowessness would be shortened i hope. And the best part, lepas ni boleh jamming dgn Paul Moss or Ahmad Izham coz theyre masters of the keys...haha. Office Paul ada satu keyboard / synth buat display je...tapi cool siot. Bodek dia kasi aku pinjam setahun ok gak...
actually tempted gak for piano tapi karang kena beli piano pulak...besar gedabak tu. Ive seen live video Jamie Cullum on piano hari tu...pergh...jadi macam rock pulak dia main piano tu..'We're twentysomething yeah...'....
about lessons - not sure when i'm gonna take coz takut jugak terbusy, cannot focus on it...but i'll try to find time...
Just dont want to enrol, then dapat pergi 1, 2 kelas je...lepas tu give up...(that's why i've KIVed to do MBA for soo long coz just so malas to do academic stuff now lah)
might ask Guitar Store hartamas if they offer keyboard - sini best pasal lepas kelas - boleh gak gi lenjan gitar2 Godin mahal kat situ...haha... |

laa..my earlier post got type error rupanya...i've edited...sorry
to clarify my query - it's actually between keyboard vs classical guitar...not electric guitar...(coz i know a bit on electric guitar already)
so gapster - u got any views on classical guitar?
but seriously, i'll be more cair if i see some gorgeous babes playing classical guitar than a keyboard...coz i feel there's this deep mystery and passion in classical guitar...
but hey, with a keyboard - u can tweak it to sound in whatever instrument you want rite? haha... |
