This is based on my little knowledge of guitar effects:
Delay
====
- to repeat the input signal...
- example: if you play "ting...", delay will make it 'tingg..tiing..ting..ing..ng..." --- where it very much depends on how much feedback/repeat and delay time dialed in
- delay is a time-based effect
Compressor
=========
- also refered as a sustainer or a "milker" or a "squeezer" where it compresses your input signal and let out the tone of the subtle sound
- if dialed in too much, lots of hissing or humming could be heard --- either caused by the noise from your pickups or cables... because a compressor may also amplify those unwanted signal...
- therefore, you must be careful when setting the threshold that controls when the compressor kicks in
I personnally use a compressor for fuller sound. Just can't part with it. My ears do notice the diff with and without a compressor in my setup. Do try to include it in your chain... Just make sure it's in the 1st position (after your guitar) or after your wah or noise suppressor.
hope it helps...
regards,
