Here's a VERY famous/controversial photo illustrating the neck tenon on Gibson Les Paul Standards (top - not very much wood to wood contact is there? Makes you wonder about the quality of the joint.) and Gibson Les Paul Historics (bottom), which feature the long neck tenon. Which one would you want?

Note: This photo was taken by Gibson and was put on Gibson's website in an article that described the differences between the Les Paul Standards and the Custom Shop historic reissues. The pictures were taken down after an uproar in the online guitar community - many were shocked and appalled that the neck joint on Les Paul Standards was so badly made. Look at it - there is no contact between the neck and the body except at the sides. This has a huge effect on vibration transfer, tone and sustain. In an age of automated production and CNC machines, such an obvious cost-cutting measure that had such a negative impact on the guitar's structure and tone is inexcuseable. Many people refused to believe that these were real gibson photos until they saw the article on gibson.com

Also related to resonance/tone, this shows Gibson's "weight relieving" of Les Pauls. I wonder how many Gibson buyers are even aware they're buying a swiss cheese body.

I've always been a bit blur on this issue since I've never open up any Les Paul to see for myself(except to see the tenon at the pickup cavity).

fretted bros,

at last khairold brought the issue up. these are the issues which where discussed at gg pro shop about more than 2 years ago. we discovered that the newer gibsons got less tone and less sustain compared to the vintage models. it may have the looks but not the tone. the topics discussed are the issues like dovetails, angle joints and rising tongue. he was arguing on how of these guitars were made lately. i've always mentioned earlier that buying with your eyes on musical instrument could be dangerous... he has repaired lots of gibsons, but as been said, the older ones always have that 'gary moore kind of tone'. the newer ones, hmm, sad to say,,, get 70s one, or older the better! thanking khairold for waking most of us up!

woof!

Even if I'm selling a Gibson right now I wouldn't mind starting the post gapster.. hehe
What I've learned is, no matter what you tell or pictures you show.
Prove that brand A is better than Brand B or whatever it is...
People will buy what they wanted to buy.
The resale value of Gibson will always hold good.

70's Gibson is still obtainable I think.
It's the 60's that's scary to be looked at.

A good quality Les Paul?
danger3s have a Tokai, maybe he can say something.
Myself have a couple of Orville, they're not too bad either.

Mr Woof,
Maybe I can bring along my Orville to GG's place for him to look at?
Would love to hear what he have to say about them.
