Hi semua,
Finally aku jumpa juga forum audio recording Malaysia.
Anyways, objektif aku ialah nak rakam demo untuk band aku menggunakan laptop. Basicly smua gear for instrument dah lengkap. Tinggal nak decide approach to record. Memandangkan aku guna laptop, so pci card tak bley pakai. Firewire slot pun takde. So the way i see it, aku hanya ada option guna USB interface kan??? Pls corect me if I'm wrong.
So, so far aku rasa aku kena cari usb interface yg ada at least 6 mic preamp cuz nak record drums as well. Betul tak? ataupun aku bleh guna usb interface pastu connect ngan mixer? Is this my only option untuk home recording?
Thanks in advance n Selamat Berpuasa!!!

If u want to use Firewire cards u can always use a PCMCIA to Firewire card.
rare to see 6 pre amps on a usb interface. probably just me but I wouldn't believe on the USB for so many channel anyway
Using a mixer you'll have no control over the tracks after recording.(assuming if your gonna mix down all ur drums to stereo in ur mixer before u send to ur soundcard/interface).
So I would think the PCMCIA to Firewire card then a firewire soundcard would be better.(recomended Texas intrument chips would be better) |

Hi okta, thanks for the advice.
I also doubt there's that many pre's on a USB. Good call on the firewire though. Didn't think about the pcmcia option. I also found out there's a USB to firewire card. Interesting...
In a perfect world i should get the PCMCIA card to Firewire card together with the Presonus Firepod with 8 mic pre's & I'm all set. PERFECT!!! Unfortunately back in reality the presonus alone cost thousands & i'm on minimum wage...
That's why I was looking at the mixer to interface option since it wont break my budget of under rm1k. But u said sumthing about no control over the tracks after recording. Can you pls elaborate on this? Is there anyway getting around that?
Thanks for the advice dude!!! |

No prob dude,
On the mixer thing. I think i worte something on this sometime ago...but since i am so free..
The "normal: setup would be, let's say all ur 6 mic to the mixer and u do all ur compression/eq/panning etc on the mixer and then you mix it down to a stereo track and send it to your Audio Interface and record with (your choise of software)
By doing this, you will not have control of your individual track that you have on the mixer e.g Snare/Kick/toms..etc..
meaning, you can't apply any equalization to ur snare track only at this point. But you still can do it on the overall drums.
so if u can get a good mix on ur mixer this should be a problem.
Get around that?
There's some mixer that has multiple bus/output. so u can still send individual tracks to your soundcard, which means u still need a soundcard with more than a stereo in. Or if u have a mixer and interface that has ADAT I/O which can transfer 8 tracks in a single lightpipe. |

Sebenar benarnya aku dah buat some research tentang home recording ni, tinggal drum recording tu yg buat sangkut. Aku ada gak terpikir nak pakai midi ngan EZDrummer tuk drum tracks tapi aku masih tak terrer lah guna barang tu.
Ko ader tak alternative lain? especially when u say "CHEAP"... tu magic word tu... share2 la kat sini

bro Eternal,
i'm confuse with your post la bro.Maybe it's just me.
Your magic word
Quote: | "survey" "testing" "advice" |
Isn't this what thread is for? survey and advice? Testing aku tak tau la
maybe I can setup something for testing
Kalau nak budget record satu band live
1st step the source must be at it's best(the band?artist?)
then the equipment...
mic computer Rm10(I've tried a few and the quality does vary eventho same price...weird)
soundcard onboard.
software free( you still need to pay your internet service of course)
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php?section=download
then you can start experiment with the mic placement. The last time I tried this, the vocalist was place closes to the mic. Of course the key word for this would be experiment. Try whatever, Logical or not
then can tweak the whole stereo track. render. then post up to www.i-bands.net
get some ass kicking in the Song Review thread and go back to do improvement .
cheers!
lapar giler... gua pi buy food from pasar ramadhan 1st, pekena lepat pisang best ni..
PS: notice the smiley all around the post? I'm trying not offend anyone here. heh... |

Sup dudes,
After much survey, testing & advice... hehehe pinjam ayats eternal jap, i'm gonna ditch live drum recording at the moment. Gonna use the midi drum in my daw for the drumming. Kena tune skit with sum effects & plugins to get some acoustic feel eventhough tak 100% but ok la, save budget.
Pastu boleh buat double kicking yg maut ngan tribal tom fill meletup yg aku confirm tak akan tahu camner nak buat live. Itupun kalau ada chance main live
Could be going for the pcmcia firewire option. Watch this space!!!
Thanks for all the feedbacks!!! |

there's another way....budget-friendly but more work, but hi-quality!
hardware: soundcard with just stereo input, mikes for recording
Step1: get the whole band to play, record everything in one simple straightforward mix. This mix goes into Track1 of your DAW
Step2: get each instrument re-played, using Track1 as a backing track
Step 3: mute Track 1 : viola! you got multi-track recordings
advantage: can re-record each instruments and have as many takes as needed to get a right take. Can add all sorts of effects etc to each track....high-quality end result.
Note: If you want to be working with MIDI too, then probably start with a Track1a, i.e. basic song structure with MIDI instruments,so your measures/clock setting etc are all properly structured.
Drums: if you got a live drum set, and a real drummer: USE THAT! midi drums etc, will never get close to the sound of a real drum kit even if you do basic miking....can mike a drum kit with just 2 mikes , good sound. Unless you want electronic drum sounds, of course.
I used BFD drums for all my album's songs cos could not get a real drummer....it's the closest to a "real" drum sound I could get, but a real drum kit would have been much better.
cheers!

Sup raggy,
Another great idea!!! But i cant la, i dun have a full band now & i cant play all the instruments myself.
About the MIDI drums, ur right. Nothing beats the real thing but u can however get them to sound almost close to the real thing EXCEPT for the crash cymbals I been playing around with the MIDI effects for the drums doing the random velocity, decay, stretch & so on and the results r not bad. Besides, im trying to do an industrial rock/metal kinda thing so a triggered sounding drums here n there are acceptable.
I am however are stuck with the crappy machinery crash cymbals sounds... I just cant get em to lose a bit of that machine feel. Im still tinkering with the effects but im not keeping my hopes up.
Great feedback once again. Thanks everyone!!! |

By doing this you still can't get individual drum tracks in to the PC unless u play the individual drum part snare/kick/hihat/ etc..
BTW .. Raggy when u giving me ur MESA? |
