If you still want to have a cheap multi-input preamped interface, try the behringer ultragain pro-8 digital ada8000. It has 8 mic & line ins & outs with built-in preamps on each channel plus phantom power. The price I think is below 1.5k

I use Fruity Loops 5 only, to record track by track and effects. Aku record pakai built in Windows Recorder tu ... tp arrange dlm fruityloops. The hardest part about it is to learn using it.
My Steps :
1 : Buat drums ... men susun2 je ... kalau ko nak record drum sniri buat la kn .. tp kalau eq xde and jiran sbelah marah sbb bising ... this is the best option. Drum recording sniri aku tatau cmne nak buat ...
2 : Bass ... ko bleh record sniri la ... since ko de equiptment tp kalau la xde .. just pakai je string sample dlm tu ... adjust pakai equalizer ... dpt la bunyik bass.
3 : Track Guitar ... record clean ... effects smua ada ... or kalau ko nak rec ngn effects pn xpe .. tp kalau clean, post processing sng skit. Effects ada overdrive je ... kalau nak bunyi metal zone tu ko kne adjust pakai equalizer.
4 : Vocal tak leh lari la ... kne beli mic bagus la. Kalau mic RM20 utk chat internet tu ... takyah la ... Aku pakai Samson nye mic yg pakai utk podcast ... cucuk USB. Papehal ... suara tak puas ati .. adjust pakai equaliser je.
Equiptment aku :
-Laptop(duh!!!)
-Guitar
-Jack
-Microphone Samson C01U
-Headphone(jiran sblah marah .. tp klo rekod vocal ... nk jerit tu kne timing masa die xde la ... hahaha)

Simple ...
The best thing about this approach is the post processing. Ko leh buat mcm2 ngn tracks ko, unlike recording track by track kat studio ...
Siap kalau silap timing ... ko leh adjust kasi betul ... then kalau ko malas rekod byk2 track yg sama ... ko leh copy paste je ... hahaha.
Menurut experience aku la (correct me if I'm wrong) .. nk recording sedap ... its all in sound balancing and this requires experience. Kalau beli equiptment beribu tak reti pakai tak guna gak.
I too still have much to learn.
Kalau ko pakai Windows ni option bagus ... kalau Linux .. ko kne install WINE ... tp leceh skit ... klo ko bkn computer geek, payah la.
Kalau ko pakai MAC OSX .. pakai GarageBand .. Aku tak pernah pakai...
But I've heard a lot about it.
