10. JEFF BUCKLEY GRACE (1994)
Guitarists: Jeff Buckley, Michael Tighe, Gary Lucas
Buckley was so nimble of voice, his commanding guitar skills – he was a graduate of the GIT school in LA – were often overlooked. Shimmer, sparkle, raunch, power, plus that voice... Until his tragic drowning, here was a superstar in waiting.
You say: “So much promise, a beautiful record and a stunning player.” Raymond Ruiz"
Download now: Grace, Hallelujah
Did you know: Eerily, the last words sung on Grace are: “Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over.”

9. OASIS Definitely Maybe (1994)
Guitarists: Noel Gallagher, Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs
An intoxicating, adrenaline rush of a debut LP that felt like a ‘best of’ from day one. Walls of overdriven guitar provide the backdrop of Liam Gallagher’s Lennon-meets-Lyndon sneer.
You say: “An awesome debut. The’ll never be able to top it.” Stephen Williams
Download now: Rock N’ Roll Star, Slide Away
Did you know: Producer Owen Morris used a ‘brickwall’ mastering technique to ensure that Oasis were the loudest band on the radio.

8. THE DARKNESS Permission To Land (2003)
Guitarists: Justin Hawkins, Dan Hawkins
Huge riffs, cod opera and a sense of hunour, all mixed into a unique yet strangely familiar package. Could have been the next big thing... but it wasn’t to be.
You say: “Brought rock back to the charts in the guitar drought. Bloody great!” Andy Lewis
Download: Black Shuck, Get Your Hands Off My Woman
Did you know: The old legend of East Anglia’s demon dog, the Black Shuck was thought to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Hound Of The Bakersvilles.

7. SEX PISTOLS Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols (1977)
Guitarists: Steve Jones
Defining, outrageous, uncompromising, intense... the Sex Pistol’s only official album is many things but above all else it’s a timeless rock ‘n’ roll album – whoever it was that really played on it.
You say: “Anarchy... made me want a guitar. Brilliant, unique production.” Keith Levers
Download: Anarchy in the UK, Pretty Vacant
Did you know: Most of the bass duties were handled by Jones and Glen Matlock: though Sid Vicious is believed to have played on Bodies.

6. THE STONE ROSES The Stone Roses (1989)
Guitarists: John Squire
The grooves of Reni, the basslines of Mani, the melodies of Brown and the mercurial, hypnotic riffs and lead lines of Squire – rarely has a debut displayedsuch musical synergy and fully realised songwriting.
You say: “Had a magic touch from ’89 to ’91. John Squire is a legend.” Dave Casey
Download now: Waterfall, I Am The Resurrection
Did you know: Slash from Guns N’ Roses allegedly offered to play with the band after Squire’s departure.

5. BLACK SABBATH Black Sabbath (1970)
Guitarists: Tony Iommi
It may be contested whether this invented the sound of heavy metal but there’s no doubt that the title track defines the genre. Aside from The Devil’s Third there’s a clear Led Zeppelin influence to the inspired blues of Iommi’s playing.
You say: “Simple – the first metal record!” Gareth Podmore
Download now: Black Sabbath, NIB, Wicked World
Did you know: The album was released on Friday 13 February 1970 in the UK.

4. LED ZEPPELIN Led Zeppelin I (1969)
Guitarists: Jimmy Page
The seeds of their legend are present and correct here, with Page’s bluesy style complemented perfectly by Plant’s vocals and John Bonham’s kinetic drums.
You say: “Page’s tone is so original and big, and he hadn’tt even got his Gibson!” Myles Eastwood
Download now: Dazed And Confused, Communication Breakdown
Did you know: Page got the inspiration to the riff for Communication Breakdown from Eddie C*o*c*hrane’s Nervous Breakdown.

3. DIRE STRAITS Dire Straits (1977)
Guitarists: Mark Knopfler, David KnopflerMark Knopfler’s band were originally so-named due to lack of success, but this debut eventually alerted the world to one of the UK’s most subtle six-string stylists.
You say: “At last a guitar-driven British band that wasn’t metal.” Ceri Shields
Download now: Sultan’s Of Swings, Down To The Waterline
Did you know: ‘Guitar George’ (ie: ‘he knows all the chords’) is singer-songwriter George Borowski, also guitar tech to Teenage Fanclub and Pixies.

2. JIMI HENDRIX Are You Experienced (1968)
Guitarists: Jimi Hendrix
Tame, maybe, compared to his live shows. AYE still left Clapton and Townshend reeling with guitar shock and awe. “When Jimi arrived, everything changed,” marvelled The Who man. Quite simply every guitarist should own this album.
You say: “There’s no better debut album, surely. Is there?” Keir Robinson
Download now: Purple Haze, Red House
Did you know: Jimi’s label omitted Red House from the US version: "America does not like the blues” they said.

1. VAN HALEN Van Halen (1978)
Guitarists: Eddie Van Halen
Certainly one of the greatest guitar albums, the likes of Eruption and I’m The One contain a level of technique that’s rarely been bettered, and certainly not by VH...
You say: “An introduction to Zidane – or should that be Cruyff? – of the guitar world. Massive!” Nick Rundall
Download now: Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, I’m The One
Did you know: Eddie originally wrote Ain’t Talkin’... a year before the album was released, but at first didn’t think it good enough to show his bandmates.

Let me add:

a. THE RYTHM BOYS Oh Fatimah (1965)
Guitarist: Ayub Taib
Vocalist: A. Ramlie

b. ORKES TERUNA Dara Pujaan (1966)
Guitarist: Basheer Ahmad
Vocalist: L. Ramlee

c. THE SIGLAP FIVE Seruling Anak Gembala (1965)
Guitarist: Karim
Vocalist: Jeffrydin

d. LES FENTONES Suzzana (1964)
Guitarist: Kamaruddin Ahmad
Vocalist: M. Osman

e. ORKES NIRWANA Tak Mengapa (1965)
Guitarist: A. Rahman Hassan

Vocalist: A. Rahman Hassan

f. WESTERN UNION BAND Sausolito (1972)
Guitarist: Krisinathan
Vocalist: Kristinathan

Guitarist Issue 284 December 2006
