Anyone has it ?
My new LP copy samick AV3 guitar.. bloody hell, sometimes a crack will just appear out of no where.
Then the neck pocket behind also got crack in the lacquer finish (doesn't follow the wood grain).
Mostly cosmetic, does not affect guitar tuning/intonation and playability.
But i cannot stand the unsightly cracks.
Not sure what finishing they use, it seems very thick coat, could be polymer or nitrocellulose, but i am guessing polymer (but still cracks sometimes by itself)
Is this normal ? My ibanez and cheap squier strat has no finishing crack issues.
It's just this av3 only have it, and i could clearly see the coating is very very thick, at least 1mm of lacquer coat. |

it's made in indonesia model, but the lacquer application is bloody thick as hell.
1 mm is too much i think. |

Without looking inside (since it's non-transparent finish) it's hard to tell.
If you've never dropped the guitar, most likely it's a finish/lacquer/cosmetic crack.
I've read about sudden exposure to extreme temperatures make that happen.
The wood expand due to high levels of humidity and cracks the finish.
This is why unfinished/lightly finished guitars are desireable!
My next guitar if I get one, will be bare wood only. no lacquer or any finishes!
As for repairs... there're a few ways.
It's not worth sending to a tech if your guitar is under 1k.
If it's non-transparent finish, it would be easier to fix compared to those pure transparent lacquer.
I would buy a matchin nail polish color, coat the cracks, then wait to dry (4 hours best), then coat another one.
Then I will use a 1200++ grit sandpaper with mineral oil (baby oil also can but must contain mineral oil) and sand down the access.
If access is too much, get a razor blade and scrape off before sanding.
Then I would use brasso metal polish (use a lot) applied on tissue paper and wipe the sanded area aggressively with the wadding non-stop.
Then clean it up with whatever polish cloth you have.
I did this for me slightly chipped strat and it works, reduced the ding by 90 percent. |
