Review from: THE METAL OBSERVER (Rate: 9.5 out of 10)
Original Source: http://www.metal-observer.com/articles.php?lid=1&sid=1&id=14562
ENJOY!
A couple months ago, in my review for DEAD EPISODE’s self-titled EP, I expressed my increasingly growing disdain towards the modern melodic Death Metal scene. Generic, AT THE GATES-worshipping "Gothencore" bands have been popping up like wildfire for the greater part of the last decade, and their demise and fall, as a scene on a larger scale, is still nowhere in sight. This brand of melodic Death Metal, defined by breakdowns, "chugga-chugga" guitar riffs and "Slaughter Of The Soul" imitation, is vastly removed from what makes melodic Death Metal good, and at its best moments, inspiring. Despite the general disregard for the genre’s finer points, there are still a few bands out there who care about the genre’s integrity and strive to proliferate its artistic merits. HIDDEN SILENCE is one such band; their music is heavy, beautifully melodic, and it is seasoned with a great deal of atmosphere. HIDDEN SILENCE represent everything that is right with melodic Metal.
Hailing from Selangor, Malaysia (which I can’t imagine is a haven for Metal of any kind), these Southeast Asians know exactly what goes into successful melodic Metal. Most of these songs feature a brilliant balance between thundering riffs and drum work, and melodic, often melancholically atmospheric passages. The tremolo riff work during "Blood World" mirrors the choleric passion of the vocal performance to create an incomparable aura of distress similar to mid-90s DISSECTION. The bands makes good use of guitar harmonies, which is almost a mandatory element in good melodic Death Metal.
HIDDEN SILENCE also seems to have a good impression of what good Metal is in general. Listening to this album, I can’t help but occasionally feel like I’m lost in the adventurous halls of QUEENSRYCHE’s "Operation Mindcrime", or that I’m swabbing the decks of one of RUNNING WILD’s gargantuan pirate vessels. The only time this traditional Metal influence affects them negatively is during the opening guitar lick to "Desperate Dog". It sounds so much like IRON MAIDEN’s "Fear Of The Dark" that I presumed it to be a cover before the song blossomed into something else. And, to be fair, it does move on to other things after the opening riff is finished, only calling on that riff for support a few times. It is actually one of the catchiest songs on the album, and it contains all of the gorgeous melodic landscapes that the other songs possess. Ultimately, this album feels less "Death Metal" than it does "melodic Heavy Metal with harsh vocals", but this doesn’t necessarily hurt its validity as a member of the genre. It is still heavy in all of the right places, and it is equally melodious.
The production here is pretty raw. The bass guitar is often lost in the mix, and the occasional keyboard use is as well. The lower production value actually assists in the album’s appeal more often than not; "Black Hearted Spiritual" places all of its focus on song writing and none of the music’s passion is deteriorated by the lack of frills. The production donates a sort of youthful passion to the music, and it is refreshing to listen to a melodic Death Metal album that can succeed without crystal clear production values.
What I’m about to say might sound like a premature statement based off of my unfathomable enjoyment of "Black Hearted Spiritual", but I think HIDDEN SILENCE have potential to blossom into the frontrunners of the current melodic Death Metal scene. If enough people pay attention to them, they could go on to do incredible things for a genre that I had nearly given up on. If your are like me, and you miss the Gothen-days of yonder, do whatever you can to get a copy of "Black Hearted Spiritual"–it is just that good.

Interview with Hidden Silence on Metal Terus!
