Grymlock, seriously someone (I won't name the person yet) helping me to run my label (Umbrella Records) is suggesting that I should plan to organise gigs soon. It will be a way for generating some income to the bands and the label. I am still thinking about it. Although not much money is going to be generated, a bit of $ is better than nothing, right?
At this moment, I am digging money from my own pocket but no $ coming in...haha... |

the few gigs i've been involved in organising (longdrawn mainly), i didn't really make much money.
but at least i managed to cover cost of equipment rental and pay the bands some amount. it's difficult to make money organising shows, unless like grymlock said, you don't pay the bands.
i think the only way to really make money doing shows is if you get big corporate sponsors involved. then organiser gets a cut and bands get paid quite ok too. not easy pitching gig ideas to big sponsors though. _________________ www.i-bands.net/lied

i think one of the concerns people will have, esp with you doing a compilation is that you may be accused of exploiting bands to make money. i mean since you can't pay the bands for the songs you're looking for to do your compilation cd, and you will be selling the cd, this may rub people the wrong way.
same with gigs, sometimes if you don't make the accounting for a gig transparent enough, people will bitch and moan about what you are doing and how much money you're making off the bands.
i think in both cases (gig & compilation cd), one way to circumvent the issues is by getting everyone financially involved in the project as well. split the cost of recording, producing the compilation CD. as a label, perhaps you could handle the promotion and settle distribution issues, but as far as the CD goes, if everyone is involved financially and you make sure everyone knows exactly what accounting is going on, then everyone has to work to make the CD successful. all bands can get a number of CDs based on how much money they put in, and the bands can recover their cost by selling those CDs.
similarly, with gigs, if all bands involved chipped in for equipment rental or any sort of payment necessary, all bands would have an incentive to make the show successful to recover their costs and turn a profit. i haven't managed to do anything like this in a gig context here, but i would like to try one of these days. _________________ www.i-bands.net/lied

Thanks for the support and all the advice. One day we should all meet up and sit down to discuss about this.
Liar, are you Adlin? The bands are financing themselves in the recording. To be fair, I hope to help promoting them anyway I can. I am getting the bands to promote my label indirectly. I want people to see a product - the compilation demo ...just to prove that I mean what I said...and I really hope for a united underground music scene. I am praying that Soundscape and the Indian underground music scene will be a part of this.
I am afraid of being accused of being a leach too. So far, most of the bands I talked to seems understanding. To tell u the truth, I hope to sell the CD cheap - maybe RM5 (I'll try to keep the price low). Although some people told me the cost of compilation can be hiked up a bit further. I think the people with such accusation are the ones haven't done any such thing before - basically the NATO (No Action Talk Only) ones.
With the help of you guys and other labels, I believe holding gigs to promote the compilation is possible.
I don't have a high expectation for this project. High expectation will usually cause disappointment. I'll do everything in a small scale and see how it goes...improve as we go along...step by step (oh dear.. I have the phobia of New Kids On The Block's Step By Step) |
